Mrs. Torres- 4th grade

Hello families! My name is Mrs. Torres, and I am so excited to be your child’s fourth-grade teacher at Dolores St. This will be my 11th year teaching at our wonderful school. Throughout my time here, I’ve had the joy of teaching kindergarten, first grade, third grade, and fourth grade, and each grade has helped me understand students’ learning journeys from many different perspectives.

I’m looking forward to a year full of growth, curiosity, and success. Thank you for partnering with me to support your child—we’re going to have a fantastic year together!

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

I’m so excited to partner with you this year. Fourth grade is a big year for growth, and your child will learn many new skills. The Common Core Standards help guide what we teach and what students should be able to do by the end of the year. Here’s a simple overview of what your child will be learning:

Reading

Fourth graders begin reading to learn. They will read stories, articles, and nonfiction texts and practice explaining what they read in their own words. They’ll work on:

  • Finding the main idea

  • Comparing different texts

  • Using evidence from what they read to support their answers

Writing

Students will become more confident writers. This year they will write:

  • Opinion pieces

  • Informational reports

  • Personal and creative stories

They will learn how to organize their writing, use good details, and revise and edit just like real authors.

Math

Fourth grade math builds important skills that students will use for years to come. This includes:

  • Multiplication & Division: mastering facts and solving multi-step problems

  • Fractions: comparing fractions, finding equivalents, and adding or subtracting them

  • Decimals: understanding place value and how decimals connect to fractions

  • Geometry & Measurement: working with angles, lines, shapes, and measurement conversions

  • Word Problems: solving real-world problems that may take several steps

A big focus this year is helping students explain their thinking and use more than one strategy when solving problems.
